Exchange Meeting with H.E. José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) – (22/08/2025)

On August 22, 2025, the Japanese Parliamentary Committee for World Federation (Chair: Speaker Fukushiro Nukaga) hosted an exchange meeting with H.E. José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, at the House of Representatives Second Members’ Office Building in Tokyo.

The meeting was attended by Diet members from across the political spectrum, ambassadors and envoys from ASEAN member states, as well as representatives from the World Federalist Movement Association, academics, and business leaders.

President Ramos-Horta emphasized Timor-Leste’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and peaceful regional cooperation. He highlighted the country’s strong record of peaceful transitions of power, press freedom, and good relations with neighboring Indonesia, Australia, and ASEAN states. He also outlined major ongoing development projects, including large-scale shipbuilding in partnership with Japan and France, renewable energy initiatives, and infrastructure expansion.

In the discussion session, participants raised questions on Timor-Leste’s reconciliation with Indonesia, opportunities for industrial cooperation in shipbuilding and water infrastructure, administrative challenges, and the future of natural gas development. The dialogue reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the rule of law and multilateral cooperation to ensure regional peace and stability.
