A wide-ranging group of scholars and practitioners of UN peace operations critically examined the New Agenda for Peace presented by Secretary-General António Guterres in June 2023. The participants found that the New Agenda for Peace addressed new threats to peace that did not exist 30 years ago when the first Agenda for Peace was published by Boutros Boutros-Ghali 30 years ago. Yet, the New Agenda could have presented more in-depth “what” had to be done and “how” they could be implemented. They found the need

Ambassador Abdel Latif, Director of the Cairo Center for Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping Training (CCCPA) located in Cairo, Egypt, visited the Japanese Diet Members’ Office on July 26, 2023, and met with parliamentarian members of the Diet of Japan Committee for World Federalism. Following the opening remarks by Chairman Eto and Ohashi, Abedel Latifi explained that his center became a symbol of close cooperation between Japan and Egypt, and over the past 15 years, with the support of the Japanese government, CCCPA has trained an estimated 20,000 African trainees. This is an informal translation of some of the points made by Professor Sukehiro Hasegawa, Executive Director for Academic Exchange of the United Nations Association of Japan, Distinguished Professor of the Kyoto University of the Arts, and Former Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (Timor-Leste), to senior members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on March 28, 2023. Three events proposed and approved by the Diet Committee for World Federalist Movement are (1) Tokyo Peacebuilding Forum (co-sponsored by the Diet Committee and the Global Peacebuilding Association of Japan), (2) the Commission on Global Governance continues to address global issues, e.g. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gender empowerment, and (3) a signature movement to establish the United Nations Parliamentary Assembly.

Mr. FUKUYAMA is a native of Tokyo, he graduated from Doshisha University and received a master’s degree from Kyoto University.

Mr. INOUE is a senior member of the House of Representatives in the Diet. A native of Toyama, Toyama and graduate of Tohoku University, he was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in 1990.
