Councillor Muneo Suzuki (Independent Member of the House of Councillors) delivered the following intervention during the commemorative meeting marking the 80th Anniversary of the Founding of the United Nations and the 20th Anniversary of the Parliamentary Resolution on the World Federation.
Councillor Suzuki expressed his support for the draft proposal for a resolution and respectfully offered a suggestion to further strengthen its message. He emphasized that addressing global environmental challenges is one of the most pressing imperatives of our time and recommended that a reference to the “global environment” be incorporated toward the conclusion of the text. In view of the objective of promoting the establishment of a world federation, Councillor Suzuki underscored that including such a reference would be both timely and appropriate. He recalled that the 21st century has long been heralded as the “century of the environment” and noted that, although the political message conveyed by the draft is already powerful, it would be enriched by highlighting the global fight against climate change as a fundamental and urgent priority.
Councillor Suzuki also emphasized the importance of bipartisan collaboration in advancing efforts toward the realization of a world federation and encouraged all concerned parties to actively promote and support these initiatives. He shared a personal reflection from his career, recalling his service as Deputy Foreign Minister during the official visit of President Mikhail Gorbachev to Japan in 1991. Councillor Suzuki expressed his deep admiration for President Gorbachev’s vision and initiatives, including Perestroika, and affirmed that these ideas remain vital to the world today. In his view, President Gorbachev’s profound contributions to peace and reform made him truly deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Reflecting on the broader aspiration for global unity, Councillor Suzuki recounted the powerful message conveyed by Japan’s first astronaut, Mr. Mamoru Mohri, who observed during his mission that “from space, no national borders are visible on Earth.” Councillor Suzuki praised the enduring significance of this vision, emphasizing the need to cherish and uphold the spirit of unity that transcends national boundaries. In conclusion, he reaffirmed that the ultimate aim of politics must be the attainment of lasting world peace, and he reiterated Japan’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling its role in advancing the cause of a world federation. Councillor Suzuki called for the continued cooperation and engagement of all stakeholders in pursuit of this noble objective.
