NAKAGAWA Masaharu, Secretary-General of the Japanese Parliamentary Committee for the World Federation, said in his opening remarks that although the International Organization for Migration (IOM) was not yet well known in Japan, he wanted to express his gratitude to the IOM for its various activities to support the immigration and settlement of foreign nationals in Japan. The IOM advised Japan to accept refugees from Myanmar into Japan in the form of third-country resettlement and also supported Japanese language education for Brazilian, Peruvian, and other people of Japanese origin living as foreign residents in Japan.(27/02/2024)

Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), explained IOM’s latest activities at a discussion meeting with members of the National Diet of Japan from both the ruling and opposition political parties, organized by the Japanese Parliamentary Committee for World Federation. The participating Diet members asked for an explanation of the differences between the roles of IOM and UNHCR. They also pointed out the challenges in accepting more foreigners in Japan. Ambassador Illidio Ximenes da Cost of Timor-Leste attended the Kosovo Independence Day celebration on February 20, 2024. He suggested that a seminar be held to compare the peace and state-building experiences of the two countries, Kosovo and Timor-Leste. In an online discussion meeting organized by the Kyoto Peacebuilding Center and supported by the Peacebuilding Association of Japan and ACUNS Tokyo Office held on 12 January, President José Ramos- Horta called for reforming the Security Council to meet the traditional and new challenges posed to Humanity, particularly by Artificial Intelligence by expanding the numbers of permanent and non-permanent members to overcome the legacy of the Cold War. Ambassador Shinyo found it necessary to abolish the permanent membership in the long run and create a new forum for cooperation not only between the Great Powers but also between the so-called global or middle-power countries and the Global South.
